Less than a month after receiving tons of backlash for the rollout of his temporary travel ban, Donald Trump is reportedly considering a major shakeup of his White House staff.
Daily Mail reported that a source close to Trump said that some of his advisors may find themselves out of the job by the summer. Two top White House figures that are in danger are chief of staff, Reince Preibus and Trump’s national security advisor, Mike Flynn. White House spokesman Sean Spicer may also see his role in the administration be reconfigured.
Flynn is reportedly in the most danger of being fired after it was revealed he may have talked about sanctions with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in a pre-inauguration call. Though Flynn said he doesn’t recall this coming up during the December call, he can’t say it did not with 100% certainty. Priebus himself defended Flynn initially, which has now put his job in danger as well.
Flynn himself has said he does not expect to be fired over the incident, and a senior source in the administration said that the national security advisor will not resign. However, other officials in the administration are concerned that Flynn may have lied to his fellow White House advisors about what happened during the call.
“The knives are out,” one official said, adding that Flynn’s future in the Trump administration is uncertain. “There’s a lot of unhappiness about this.”
CNN reported that Spicer wants his role in the White House to change, as he never wanted to take on both positions of White House press secretary and communications director. He wants at least one of these positions taken off his hands, and Trump is reportedly considering other people for the roles.
Senior advisor Kellyanne Conway was thought to be in danger after she was “counseled” last week for advertising Ivanka Trump’s clothing line. However, Trump reportedly believes Conway has proven her loyalty to him, and he is considering replacing Priebus with her as his chief of staff.
