Conservative pundit Charles Krauthammer said Friday that President Donald Trump needs to harness popularity to attack those within the government who are leaking information and stalling implementation of Trump’s agenda.
“You’ve got to get the same people to carry out a weakening of their own powers,” he said on Fox News. “For that, you need a president with a lot of public support.”
“This president has the two houses of Congress with him, so this is an opportunity to do that, and deregulation is one way to do that and depopulation of the bureaucracy, to allow the numbers to go down by attrition, is another way to do that.”
Krauthammer said the problem is not unique to Trump.
“It started with the New Deal and it’s not going to be ended with one presidency,” he said.
“It’s one of the main conservative arguments against big government,” Krauthammer explained. “It’s not that it’s just inefficient, it’s not just that it’s impersonal, it’s not just that in the way that it restricts our liberties, it’s that it develops its own interests.”
Long-time government employees who have seen presidents come and go can also serve as roadblocks, Krauthammer said.
“Every time a new person comes in and enters the cabinet, becomes the head of a department, they instantly discover that there are people who are entrenched, have been there forever who know the ropes and can foil you simply by delaying,” he added.
“This is a chronic issue and you want to use the energy and support of the ‘honeymoon’ of a new presidency, again controlling the new houses of Congress, to go ahead and attack it,” he said.
Trump sounded a similar note Saturday during his Florida rally.
“We’re going to downsize the bloated, bloated bureaucracy which make the government lien and accountable. We’re going to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C. I’ve already imposed a five year lobbying ban on the executive branch officials and lifetime ban on lobbying for a foreign government,” he told the crowd.
“You’re all part of this incredible movement. This movement that we talk about so much. … It’s a movement that is just sweeping. It’s sweeping across our country. It’s sweeping frankly across the globe. … People want to take back control of their countries and they want to take back control of their lives and the lives of their family,” Trump said.
