Former Illinois Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., was convicted a few years ago on charges of looting his own campaign fund. Now, he is trying to collect about $100,000 a year in workers’ compensation even though he plead guilty to all of the charges against him.
Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., however, is not about to let Jackson move forward with this act of welfare fraud. The Chicago Sun Times reported that Davis believes the law that allows Jackson to complete this welfare scam are wrong and need to be changed.
“I believe if you’re a member of Congress and you are convicted of stealing campaign funds, you should not be eligible to receive workers’ compensation benefits. Members of Congress need to be good stewards of taxpayer money,” Davis said. “We’re reviewing the process and possible legislative options to prevent the abuse of this program that is meant for honest-working taxpayers.”
Current laws allow all federal workers, including members of Congress, to be eligible for workers’ compensation if they suffer “from injuries sustained in performance of duty while in service to the United States.”
Jackson served time in prison for stealing $750,000 in campaign cash and using it for personal spending sprees between 2005 and 2012. Now that he’s out of jail, his income from workers comp and Social Security Disability Insurance provides him with a gross income of $138,452. Jackson scores $124,052 per year in workers comp and SSDI benefits for himself as well as an additional $14,400 per year for SSDI “derivative benefits” flowing to his children.
