Speaking Friday on Fox News, Rep. Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, slammed the FBI for having granted immunity to Paul Combetta, the computer specialist who deleted former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails.
“The FBI and the Department of Justice gave this witness transactional immunity,” Gowdy stated. “It is tantamount to giving the triggerman immunity in a robbery case.”
The South Carolina Republican’s metaphor fit perfectly. According to The New York Times, Combetta used BleachBit to scour Clinton’s server clean in March of 2015, weeks after the Select Committee specifically instructed him to leave the emails be.
Furthermore, when first questioned about these deletions in February of this year, the Platte River Networks employee denied having been aware of the order. After he received his immunity deal, however, his story completely changed, and he fessed up to the truth.
“It looks like they gave immunity to the very person they most want to prosecute,” Gowdy’s stern condemnation continued. “The person who destroyed official public records after there was a subpoena and after there was a preservation order.”
“The devil is in the chronology,” he added.
It was as if the FBI granted immunity to the actual bank robber, versus the getaway driver or the person who later helped count the money.

“You don’t give immunity to the person who walked in and robbed the bank,” Gowdy concluded. “That’s not that complicated, but that’s apparently what the FBI did.”
