U.S. Capitol police were investigating after IT contractors working for Democrats in the House of Representatives were accused of “inappropriately” accessing the House computer system, among other allegations.
According to Fox News, the contract IT workers not only had access to multiple serves and computers, but also would also perform other tasks for Democrats. One of those tasks was to place orders for a congressional office.
Police were reportedly looking into claims that the workers would purchase the required goods, then bill the office at a higher rate so that they could pocket the extra money.
U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson Eva Malecki said no House members were under investigation, according to The Washington Examiner.
“At the request of Members of Congress, the United States Capitol Police are investigating the actions of House IT support staff. No Members are being investigated,” Malecki said. “No arrests have been made. It should be noted that, administratively, House staff were asked to update their security settings as a best practice. We have no further comment on the ongoing investigation at this time.”
One unnamed member of Congress said he was concerned about the information taken by the IT workers.
“They said it was some sort of procurement scam, but now I’m concerned that they may have stolen data from us, emails, who knows,” the lawmaker said.
The scandal followed a long investigation by the FBI after hackers gained information from the computers of Democrats during the 2016 presidential election.
For example, emails from former Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta were leaked after he fell for a simple “phishing” scam that gave access to his email to unknown individuals who then leaked the emails to WikiLeaks.
